Labelthe parts of speech above all of the words in the following sentences using
the abbreviations n, pro, adj, v, adv, prep, conj, and interj. Remember that
proper nouns can include more than one word and thatyou may ignore the
words a, an, and the. Refer back to thedefinitions and examples of the parts of
speech whenever necessary. When in doubt, leave a wordunmarked until you
check the answers after each set of ten sentences.
Exercise 1
1. Bette Nesmith Graham invented correctionfluid in the 1950s.
2. She originally called her invention Mistake Out.
3. Later, she changed its name to Liquid Paper.
4. Originally, Graham worked as a typist, and she oftenmade mistakes.
5. She brought white paint to work and covered her typoswith it.
6. Soon everyone wanted a bottle of Graham’s correctionpaint.
7. She mixed the product in her kitchen and bottled itlike fingernail
polish.
8. Single-handedly, Graham developed a product that mademillions of
dollars.
9. Her son, Michael Nesmith, also benefited from hersuccess.
10. He was a member of The Monkees, a popular boy band inthe 1960s.

1. Clyde Tombaugh discovered the ninth“planet,” Pluto, in 1930.
2. Tombaugh died in 1997 at the age of 90.
3. Scientists loaded Tombaugh’s ashes onto New Horizons,a space probe
that was launched in January of 2006.
4. New Horizons will arrive near Pluto in 2015.
5. After the launch of New Horizons, astronomers deletedPluto from the
list of real planets.
6. They determined that real planets must control theirown orbits.
7. Pluto is an icy ball under the influence of Neptune’sorbit.
8. Astronomers put Pluto into a new category.
9. Therefore, the official number of planets has changedto eight.
10. Wow! That is an amazing development.

2. The title of the exhibit was “The Human Zoo.”
3. Zoo officials selected eight human volunteers.
4. Then they put the humans on display for several days.

6. The exhibit showcased three males and five females.
7. They dressed in fake fig leaves that covered theirshorts and bikini tops.
8. With its rocky ledges and cave-like structures, theenclosure had
previously housed bears.
9. The eight humans talked, played games, and received alot of attention.
10. Outside the exhibit, the zoo posted signs about humandiet, habitat,
and behavior.
