Part I Cell Biology
Every chapter-opening story and several Focus readings have
been revised to be more current and relevant to students.
Chapter 4, ◾ Membrane Structure and Function, now includes a
discussion on gating of channel proteins and a new Science
Focus on how cells talk to each other.
Chapter 5, ◾ Cell Division, includes information on the con-
trol of the cell cycle and cancer, and proto-oncogenes and
tumor suppressor genes. The discussion of cell division
in prokaryotes has been moved from this chapter to the
microbiology chapter (28).
Chapter 6, ◾ Metabolism: Energy and Enzymes, has been re-
vised to discuss cellular respiration and metabolism as it
relates to humans and their diet.
Part II Plant Biology
Chapter 9, ◾ Plant Organization and Function, has been
significantly revised to include new photos, new termi-
nology, and new organization. Plant organs (roots, stems,
and leaves) as well as the different types of plant tissues
that make up these organs are discussed in more detail.
Students are shown the journey that cotton takes from
being grown in the field to being sold as T-shirts. Plus a
new Science Focus examines how the science of tree rings
applies to historical buildings.
Part III Maintenance of the Human Body
Chapter 11, ◾ Human Organization, introduces the issue of the
risks and benefits of exposure of human skin to UV light
through a new Health Focus reading, and a new Bioethical
Focus probes the issue of testing hair for drugs. Updates
for currency include new information on warts caused by
human papillomavirus and some recently approved treat-
ments for acne.
Chapter 12, ◾ Cardiovascular System, has been revised to
include information on automatic external defibrillators,
anemias and their common causes, heart valve disease
and its treatment, recent problems with stents, and a new
image of an actual heart from a patient that has undergone
coronary bypass surgery. The Health Focus on Prevention
of Cardiovascular Disease has been updated to include
recent information on omega-3 fatty acids, as well as the
effect of alcohol on the heart.........................
