The classic car world is enormously wide andvaried. At its heart are owners who have made it their passionate business topreserve cars that might otherwise have long ago been destroyed, once theirusable life had petered out. All over the globe, there are hundreds—if notmany, many hundreds—of individual owners’ clubs, each catering to a singlemarque—sometimes, even, a single model. The clubs provide the support, camaraderie, and expertise that make the labor of love requiredto restore and run a classiccar a realistic prospect.
The restoration process usually begins when acar reaches the end of its useful life. Most cars, after several owners andmaybe more than 100,000 traveled miles, are sold at their scrap values.
The good news for the environment is thatabout 85 percent of a typical car can be recycled. But for a car with classicstatus—by dint of age or merit, or both—this is just the beginning of a new, regenerative process. Life is about to start again.
